Dormice

In the UK the Dormouse is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, making it an offense to intentional kill, injure, taking possession or control (live or dead animal, part or derivative) or damage to, destruction of, obstruction of access to any structure or place used by a scheduled animal for shelter or protection or disturbance of animal occupying such a structure or place or selling, offering for sale, possessing or transporting for the purpose of sale (live or dead animal, part or derivative) or advertising for buying or selling such things. In the UK it is also listed under Schedule 2 of The Conservation (Natural Habitats, &c.) Regulations 1994.

Little is known about the presence of dormouse across North East England, and if present what the status of populations might be. Due to the link between DWS and Durham Wildlife Trust, which is actively investigating potential dormouse habitats, the DWS team is ideally placed to provide guidance on this species.
